Transmission of Shares
Gentle, step-by-step help for legal heirs and families transferring shares after a shareholder has passed away.
Losing a family member is hard enough without having to deal with paperwork. When a shareholder passes away, their shares must be formally moved to the nominee or legal heirs through a process called transmission. The documents needed depend on whether there was a nominee, whether there is a will, and the value of the holding. We take you through it patiently, one step at a time.
This service is for you if…
- A parent or spouse has passed away and had shares in their name
- You are the nominee or a joint holder of the deceased
- There was no nominee and several legal heirs are involved
- The shares are in physical form, demat form, or both
Where cases usually get stuck
- Understanding which documents apply to your family's situation
- Shares with no nominee, where legal heirship must be established
- Getting No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) from the other legal heirs
- Name or signature differences between the deceased's records
- Old certificates, unpaid dividends or IEPF transfers found along the way
Your document checklist
- Death certificate of the shareholder
- Original share certificates or the deceased's demat statement
- PAN, Aadhaar and bank proof of the claimant(s)
- Client Master List of the claimant's demat account
- Depending on the case: Succession Certificate, Probate, Legal Heirship Certificate, or affidavits and NOCs from the other heirs
- Transmission request form and indemnity bond, as required by the RTA
This is a general list and may vary by case, company and RTA. We'll give you an exact checklist after reviewing your documents.

- 4
Submit & follow up
We coordinate with the RTA, company or DP until the shares are credited to the heir's account.
Questions about Transmission After Death
Not always. If there is a registered nominee, the process is simpler. Where there is no nominee, SEBI allows simplified documentation (affidavits, indemnity and NOCs from other heirs) up to a prescribed value per company. For higher values, a Succession Certificate, Probate or similar legal document is usually needed.
